Summary
Microelectronic chips have found home in a plethora of
embedded applications such as handheld devices, set top boxes, process
automation, automotive and medical devices. Due to a rapid growth in consumer
electronic applications, the focus of technology is shifting towards mobile
applications with emphasis on System on Chip (SoC) implementations.
The design space in such applications is characterised by fast
growing demand of functionality and performance, while still experiencing severe
power constraints. Time to market becomes even more important, making the
reduction of desi...

Nucleic acid molecules and their use in plant male sterility.
<caseId>TEC2004/052</caseId>

Summary
Research to improve the nutritional value of oilseed products and the seed
quality and germination of grain crops is being undertaken at La Trobe
University. A team of plant scientists, led by Professor Roger Parish and
Dr Song Li, have identified a missing link in the regulation of seed
development. The researchers – whose work will link closely with the new
AgriBio Centre – have had their study published in the prestigious journal The
Plant Cell.

Proof of concept for a repressor/restorer male sterility system to produce
hybrid seed in Arabidopsis has been achieved. The system can also be used for
pollen and seed containment.
The Problem
Hybrid Vigor is characterised by the production of larger plants, tolerance
to stress, disease resistance, uniformity and improved yield with plants often
being referred to as F1 hybrids. Hybrids can only work in conjunction with
pollination control mechanisms. There are three commonly used methods;
mechanical (expensive, time consuming, laborious), chemical (transitory and
expensive fro...

Smart Energy and Load Management
<caseId>MKT2010/20</caseId>

Summary
Peak energy usage
occurs during the morning and in the evenings, especially in residential
properties. At the current rate of expansion, power plants would have to be
built at ane xponential rate to accommodate the current energy usage. Therefore,
it will be more cost effective to manage energy usage consistently throughout
the day than to increase the powerplant’s generation capacity.Centre for
Technology Infusion at La TrobeUniversity and Semitech Innovations have deployed
smart energy monitoring and management pilot at the University’s
R&DPark.
